Apartment Review
i wish i had read the reviews
Review Date: 8/26/2009 Reviewer: Anonymous
not until after moving into my place in the whittier area of minneapolis did i look up reviews on irving properties. i just brushed the negativity off as generally angry people. i really wish i had read them before moving in and actually listened to the tenants' complaints. i was in a jam while looking for apartments when i moved and the unit looked decent, was in a neighborhood i enjoyed, and the overall exterior of the building was attractive so i quickly signed the lease. however, after almost one year with this company, i am now left frustrated. when first being shown the apartment i pointed out a poorly patched hole in the hardwood floor to the owner. i was assured that the patch would be fixed before i moved in. of course it was not, but i found a way to cover it and had no need to bother them to fix it. good thing because i would have been wasting my breath if i had contacted them. after only a couple weeks of living in the unit i realized that this was not the cute, quiet apartment i was looking for. almost every night there were people outside partying until 4 or 5am and people screaming at each other inside the building. i would have gone directly to the source to complain, but i was terrified to face some of these people. often times i would come home late from work, around 3 or 4am, and would find someone sleeping in the building's small entry way. i would also be disturbed late at night with someone buzzing my unit multiple times when i was not expecting visitors. the building has a small parking lot in back but i was told that all spots were taken. it has been difficult finding street parking in the area but i deal with it. however, in the almost year that i have lived here, i have never seen the lot full or even close to full with cars. now that i am not resigning my lease i have faced even more frustrations. the company asks for its tenants to notify them 58 days before the end of their lease. when dealing with former rental companies, they always directly contacted me more than two months before my lease ended to see if i wanted to resign and i thought this company was the same way, however, it was my mistake to think they were that proactive. two months before the end of my lease i called their office, of course the exact two month mark fell on a weekend and their office is not open on the weekend (which is another huge problem i have since they own so many properties). i left them a message stating that i would not be resigning and asked if there was anything they needed from me. that monday i was told to send an e-mail since they cannot take statements of not resigning over the phone, but that it might not enough time since they needed a 58 day notice and that time had lapsed and that it would be up to the owner's discretion as to whether or not i would have to pay for another month. i did some counting and realized that the day i would be sending the e-mail would be exactly 58 days. i sent the e-mail and waited to be contacted in regards to whether or not the owner thought i allowed for a sufficient amount of time. i had no intentions of paying for another month past my lease but wanted to fight them on it if they decided that i didn't give them enough of a heads up. i never heard back from them. i called many times, often facing a busy signal, left voice messages, and sent another e-mail and not until over three weeks after i sent the e-mail stating i would not resign did they contact me saying i gave them enough time. all in all, do not sign with this company at all costs. the building i live in seems adorable, but there are better places in the area that are way cheaper and are owned by much better management companies. |
